Passion for continuous learning
"Regardless of one’s age, it is important for one to always stay active and live life fully"
With a location shift of Mr Arshad’s workplace and Mdm Haslina wanting to spend more time with her family, the couple decided to retire in 2013. Since then, they have been actively attending numerous courses together. Notably, the parents of two sons enjoys the Intergenerational Learning Programmes (ILP) under National Silver Academy (NSA). In their opinion, ILPs are a good bonding platform for seniors and the younger generation. ILPs that they have attended previously includes Music with Xylophone and Arts for Seniors.
Mdm Haslina says: “We didn’t find any barriers interacting with the students who were very courteous and helpful. We really enjoyed the courses and activities.”
“It is not true that the younger generation is rude or have a bad attitude. To us, they were very respectful. "
Pursuing his interest
Having been interested in photography since young, 67-year-old Mr Arshad had attended several photography classes since retiring. This includes “Digital Photography Technology” at Singapore University of Social Sciences and “Travel Photography” at LASALLE.
“One is able to capture beautiful images as long as he or she has an interest in photography,” Mr Arshad says humbly.
He is often accompanied by Mdm Haslina, who has been very supportive towards his passion, whenever he explores the country snapping photographs. In fact, 64-year-old Mdm Haslina has been the one looking out and registering Mr Arshad for most of his photography courses!
Fulfilling her dream
On the other hand, Mdm Haslina is more interested in courses related to dancing and languages. She has done salsa previously and is currently doing rock and roll.
Additionally, Mdm Haslina has completed Spanish 1 and 2 at National University of Singapore. Despite admitting that learning Spanish wasn’t easy, Mdm Haslina impressed us when she introduced herself fluently in the language.
"It has always been my dream to learn Spanish and therefore when I retired and had the time, I decided to fulfil my dream,” Mdm Haslina shares.
Active in their mind and spirit
Mr Arshad and Mdm Haslina have expressed their desire to continuously upgrade themselves. Wanting to keep themselves active in their mind and spirit, their desire and passion for continuous learning is certainly commendable.
**Special thanks to Mr Arshad and Mdm Haslina who accepted our interview, we wish them all the very best in their lifelong learning journey.
